leninhead.JPG

The massive statue of Lenin's head that dominates the centre of Ulan Ude.

facewater.JPG

The rather murky colour of the water after Dave washes his face. Well, we had been camping for the two previous nights...

radio.JPG

'Giant plasma screen and quad sound system in every room'...

Yurisigns.JPG

Yuri signs Sammy's bonnet outside the Buryat Buddhist temple.

outsidetemple.JPG

Team Scraz at the entrance to the Buryat temple.

engineer.JPG

Dave wonders at the engineering prowess of the Buryat carpenters...

davedog.JPG

Dave is befriended by one of the many temple dogs...

puppy.JPG

...of which this was the youngest and cutest!

temple.JPG

The main building where the Dalai Lama's throne stands. Yuri bought us some tiny dragons here to guard our houses back home!

buryatvillage.JPG

Part of the Buryat village near the temple.

om.JPG

The sacred hill that overlooks the temple, upon which the Buddhist chant Om Mani Padme Hum is displayed in the Buryat language. I tried to impress with my knowledge of Buddhism, but really its just cos I listened to an awful lot of 'Gong' when I was a student....

rollinghills.JPG

The countryside between UU and the Mongolian border is fantastic...

jerry.JPG

Filling up from a jerry can between Ulan Ude and the Mongolian border.

view.JPG

Oi! I can see your head from up here! The view from our hotel window in UU.

bath.JPG

Not exactly the Ritz, but after two nights in hay fields, we were not complaining!

svetayuri.JPG

Sveta and Yuri, our friends and guides in UU. We had met Yuri before at the great gathering of Russian Toffees in Moscow...

cauty.JPG

A tree covered in prayer flags outside the temple. Bit like the Cornish 'cauty'...

mausoleum.JPG

The mausoleum that houses the remains of a monk, buried for 400 years, whose hair and nails continue to grow. I tried to convince the lama to let me see him, but he was having none of it!

deer.JPG

One of several deer kept by the monks at the temple.

tiger.JPG

Jay and Dave pose by a not very scary tiger guarding the main temple buildings...

scrazandsveta.JPG

Team Scraz and the lovely Sveta...

moretemple.JPG

"Pssst...Hide the speakers that play the disturbingly repetitive chanting like from 'Eyes Wide Shut' in here! It drives the tourists nuts!"

dumplings.JPG

The downside of being a Buryat - you have to really like mutton. Dave hated and feared these mutton dumplings, likening them to malignant sea creatures, prone to taunting him with the words "'Ello, Daaaaaaaaaave!" See his post-rally questionnaire for more details...

bridge.JPG

Crossing a river by temporary bridge, as the other had suffered 'catastrophic failure' (or a CBF). We saw a fair bit of that during the rally!

Contact Team Scraz by juggling with Buryat mutton dumplings whilst chanting 'Om Mani Padme Hum' atop a sacred hill during the full moon phase....
